I started making my own granola a few years back and have grown to love it more and more. It has become a staple in our house that I feel rather lost without. We eat it with milk, on yogurt, and as a snack. It's simple and easy to make, and so good for our bodies. One of the things, besides the taste, that I love about homemade granola is that it includes whole grains and nuts. It isn't filled with preservatives or packed full of "extra nutrients". It's just made from real, whole foods. I asked my husband a few weeks back if he wanted me to pick up any cereal at the store. He said that after reading the book "In Defense of Food" by Michael Pollen, he really had no desire to eat processed cereals again. So, more granola making has ensued!
I use this Nut and Seed Granola recipe, which I love for it's hardy nuts and easy process. I currently make a single batch at a time and store it in one of my many canisters. It's an easy project to tackle after the dinner dishes have been cleared and washed up. I love the way it makes the house smell and I find that when I make it in the evening, I wake up to the smell still lingering...a lovely way to wake up, I must say.
If you are looking for a recipe, they are not hard to come by. I highly recommend the one listed above, but here are a few others that I've found.
