garden notes :: 5.27.15

Wow!  How did it get to be Wednesday already!?  Holiday weeks can go so quickly, can't they?!  I hope you all had a good Memorial Day filled with family and friends.  Ours was quiet and relaxing and it also included a few small house projects, which was nice as well.  I was able to get the garden mostly planted this weekend, which was perfect timing as it rained all day Sunday and again all day yesterday.  That slow, steady watering and the wonderful sunshine that is forecasted for this week should set my plants up for a great start!  Hooray!

I squeezed a few more things in the garden this summer and am hoping (as always) for a more productive year than the last.  This year I have 12 tomato plants, 8 pepper plants, garlic, green pole beans, green bush beans, radishes, carrots, broccoli, spinach, basil, a tomatillo, eggplant, and beets.  On the perennial side of the garden, I have a very happy oregano plant, rhubarb, chives, peppermint, spearmint, and thyme, as well as a slew of flowers (which are finally starting to fill out and I'm lovely them so much!!).  On the deck we also have a few pots and planters going with a few varieties of lettuce, mixed greens, kale, bushy dill, sage, a minature basil plant, cilantro, and rosemary.  It feels lovely to have it all planted (except the beets and a second round of radishes and greens).  I'm excited to try a few new things in the garden this year with mulching, pruning, and succession planting to hopefully optimize the space and short summer months.  I do so love the great gardening experiment that happens each year.  It's such a fun way to try new things and figure things out (or not) as you go.
